Prosegur Cash (BME:CASH) Will Be Looking To Turn Around Its Returns
What financial metrics can indicate to us that a company is maturing or even in decline? Typically, we'll see the trend of both return on capital employed (ROCE) declining and this usually coincides with a decreasing amount of capital employed. This indicates the company is producing less profit from its investments and its total assets are decreasing. In light of that, from a first glance at Prosegur Cash (BME:CASH), we've spotted some signs that it could be struggling, so let's investigate.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Prosegur Cash:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = €165m ÷ (€1.7b - €617m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2021).
Therefore, Prosegur Cash has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Commercial Services industry average of 10% it's much better.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Prosegur Cash Tell Us?
In terms of Prosegur Cash's historical ROCE movements, the trend doesn't inspire confidence. Unfortunately the returns on capital have diminished from the 33% that they were earning five years ago. Meanwhile, capital employed in the business has stayed roughly the flat over the period. This combination can be indicative of a mature business that still has areas to deploy capital, but the returns received aren't as high due potentially to new competition or smaller margins. So because these trends aren't typically conducive to creating a multi-bagger, we wouldn't hold our breath on Prosegur Cash becoming one if things continue as they have.
On a related note, Prosegur Cash has decreased its current liabilities to 36% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
Our Take On Prosegur Cash's ROCE
In the end, the trend of lower returns on the same amount of capital isn't typically an indication that we're looking at a growth stock. It should come as no surprise then that the stock has fallen 63% over the last three years, so it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. That being the case, unless the underlying trends revert to a more positive trajectory, we'd consider looking elsewhere.
