Is Roblon (CPH:RBLN B) In A Good Position To Deliver On Growth Plans?
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
So, the natural question for Roblon (CPH:RBLN B) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

Does Roblon Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Roblon last reported its balance sheet in July 2021, it had zero debt and cash worth kr.29m. Importantly, its cash burn was kr.49m over the trailing twelve months. Therefore, from July 2021 it had roughly 7 months of cash runway. That's quite a short cash runway, indicating the company must either reduce its annual cash burn or replenish its cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
Is Roblon's Revenue Growing?
Given that Roblon actually had positive free cash flow last year, before burning cash this year, we'll focus on its operating revenue to get a measure of the business trajectory. Unfortunately, the last year has been a disappointment, with operating revenue dropping 27% during the period. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how Roblon is building its business over time.
Can Roblon Raise More Cash Easily?
Given its problematic fall in revenue, Roblon shareholders should consider how the company could fund its growth, if it turns out it needs more cash. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Roblon has a market capitalisation of kr.295m and burnt through kr.49m last year, which is 17% of the company's market value. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.
Is Roblon's Cash Burn A Worry?
On this analysis of Roblon's cash burn, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap was reassuring, while its cash runway has us a bit worried. After looking at that range of measures, we think shareholders should be extremely attentive to how the company is using its cash, as the cash burn makes us uncomfortable. Taking a deeper dive, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Roblon you should be aware of, and 1 of them is significant.
