ChemoMetec's (CPH:CHEMM) one-year earnings growth trails the 64% YoY shareholder returns
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the ChemoMetec A/S (CPH:CHEMM) share price is 62% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 28% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 26% in the last three years.
Since the stock has added kr.345m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
We check all companies for important risks. See what we found for ChemoMetec in our free report. To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
ChemoMetec was able to grow EPS by 18% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 62% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago. The fairly generous P/E ratio of 50.10 also points to this optimism.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that ChemoMetec shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 64% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 10% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
