RIAS' (CPH:RIAS B) Earnings Are Growing But Is There More To The Story?
Many investors consider it preferable to invest in profitable companies over unprofitable ones, because profitability suggests a business is sustainable. However, sometimes companies receive a one-off boost (or reduction) to their profit, and it's not always clear whether statutory profits are a good guide, going forward. Today we'll focus on whether this year's statutory profits are a good guide to understanding RIAS (CPH:RIAS B).
While RIAS was able to generate revenue of kr.294.4m in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of kr.8.55m was more important. Happily, it has grown both its profit and revenue over the last three years, as you can see in the chart below.

Importantly, statutory profits are not always the best tool for understanding a company's true earnings power, so it's well worth examining profits in a little more detail. This article will focus on the impact unusual items have had on RIAS' statutory earnings. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Importantly, our data indicates that RIAS' profit was reduced by kr.1.8m, due to unusual items, over the last year. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If RIAS doesn't see those unusual expenses repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to increase over the coming year.
Our Take On RIAS' Profit Performance
Unusual items (expenses) detracted from RIAS' earnings over the last year, but we might see an improvement next year. Based on this observation, we consider it likely that RIAS' statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at 38% per year over the last three years. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for RIAS you should know about.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of RIAS' profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. Some people consider a high return on equity to be a good sign of a quality business.
