Should You Be Adding Hapag-Lloyd (ETR:HLAG) To Your Watchlist Today?
It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Hapag-Lloyd (ETR:HLAG). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Hapag-Lloyd's Improving Profits
Hapag-Lloyd has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Outstandingly, Hapag-Lloyd's EPS shot from €33.85 to €98.33, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 190% year-on-year growth like that. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Hapag-Lloyd is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 17.8 percentage points to 52%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are Hapag-Lloyd Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It's a good habit to check into a company's remuneration policies to ensure that the CEO and management team aren't putting their own interests before that of the shareholder with excessive salary packages. For companies with market capitalisations over €7.5b, like Hapag-Lloyd, the median CEO pay is around €4.5m.
Hapag-Lloyd offered total compensation worth €2.9m to its CEO in the year to December 2021. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Hapag-Lloyd's earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. With increasing profits, its seems likely the business has a rosy future; and it may have hit an inflection point. What's more, the fact that the CEO's compensation is quite reasonable is a sign that the company is conscious of excessive spending. It will definitely require further research to be sure, but it does seem that Hapag-Lloyd has the hallmarks of a quality business; and that would make it well worth watching.
