Here's Why Media and Games Invest (ETR:M8G) Has A Meaningful Debt Burden

How Healthy Is Media and Games Invest's Balance Sheet?

According to the last reported balance sheet, Media and Games Invest had liabilities of €204.9m due within 12 months, and liabilities of €484.9m due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of €125.4m and €96.8m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total €467.6m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

The deficiency here weighs heavily on the €278.4m company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. After all, Media and Games Invest would likely require a major re-capitalisation if it had to pay its creditors today.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

The debt burden here is substantial. The good news is that Media and Games Invest grew its EBIT a smooth 79% over the last twelve months. Our View

To be frank both Media and Games Invest's interest cover and its track record of staying on top of its total liabilities make us rather uncomfortable with its debt levels. But on the bright side, its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow is a good sign, and makes us more optimistic. Looking at the balance sheet and taking into account all these factors, we do believe that debt is making Media and Games Invest stock a bit risky. Some people like that sort of risk, but we're mindful of the potential pitfalls, so we'd probably prefer it carry less debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
