If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. However, after investigating Symrise (ETR:SY1), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Symrise is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.091 = €618m ÷ (€7.8b - €971m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).

Thus, Symrise has an ROCE of 9.1%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 9.6% average generated by the Chemicals industry.

How Are Returns Trending?

In terms of Symrise's historical ROCE trend, it doesn't exactly demand attention. The company has employed 67% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 9.1%. This poor ROCE doesn't inspire confidence right now, and with the increase in capital employed, it's evident that the business isn't deploying the funds into high return investments.

In Conclusion...

As we've seen above, Symrise's returns on capital haven't increased but it is reinvesting in the business. Although the market must be expecting these trends to improve because the stock has gained 62% over the last five years. But if the trajectory of these underlying trends continue, we think the likelihood of it being a multi-bagger from here isn't high.

Symrise does come with some risks though, we found 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those can't be ignored...
