Allianz SE's (ETR:ALV) Business And Shares Still Trailing The Market

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.5x Allianz SE (ETR:ALV) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Germany have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 35x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Allianz has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Allianz would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 58% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen a 26% overall rise in EPS, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 7.8% per annum as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 12% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we can see why Allianz is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Allianz maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
