Südzucker (ETR:SZU) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Südzucker AG (ETR:SZU) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 18th of July to €0.70, which will be 75% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of €0.40. This takes the annual payment to 2.2% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Südzucker's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Based on the last payment, Südzucker was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 18.5%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 43% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €0.70 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.40. This works out to be a decline of approximately 5.4% per year over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Südzucker Could Grow Its Dividend
Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Südzucker has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 6.5% per annum. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for Südzucker's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Südzucker will make a great income stock. While Südzucker is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. To that end, Südzucker has 2 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
