If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the long term shareholders of KION GROUP AG (ETR:KGX) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 64% drop in the share price over that period.

While the last three years has been tough for KION GROUP shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

KION GROUP saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 13% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 29% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for KION GROUP the TSR over the last 3 years was -62%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

KION GROUP shareholders are up 6.1% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 7% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with KION GROUP (including 1 which shouldn't be ignored) .
