Market Participants Recognise Jones Tech PLC's (SZSE:300684) Earnings Pushing Shares 27% Higher

Despite an already strong run, Jones Tech PLC (SZSE:300684) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking further back, the 10% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

After such a large jump in price, Jones Tech's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 44.1x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 37x and even P/E's below 21x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Recent times have been pleasing for Jones Tech as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Jones Tech's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Jones Tech's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 37% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 16% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 47% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 40%, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Jones Tech's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

The large bounce in Jones Tech's shares has lifted the company's P/E to a fairly high level. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Jones Tech maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
