The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But even the best stock picker will only win with some selections. So we wouldn't blame long term Inspur Software Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600756) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 37% over a half decade. Even worse, it's down 15% in about a month, which isn't fun at all.

After losing 8.0% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

We don't think that Inspur Software's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

In the last half decade, Inspur Software saw its revenue increase by 13% per year. That's a pretty good rate for a long time period. We doubt many shareholders are ok with the fact the share price has fallen 6% each year for half a decade. Those who bought back then clearly believed in stronger growth - and maybe even profits. The lesson is that if you buy shares in a money losing company you could end up losing money.

A Different Perspective

Inspur Software shareholders gained a total return of 1.6% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 6% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
