C*Core Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:688262) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 64% share price decline.

Although its price has dipped substantially, C*Core Technology's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 13.5x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to other companies in the Semiconductor industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 5.8x and even P/S below 2x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How C*Core Technology Has Been Performing

C*Core Technology hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think C*Core Technology's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For C*Core Technology?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, C*Core Technology would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 18%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 65% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 150% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 34%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why C*Core Technology's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate C*Core Technology's very lofty P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that C*Core Technology maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Semiconductor industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
