Cosmos Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002133) Surges 26% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement
Despite an already strong run, Cosmos Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002133) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 13% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, Cosmos Group may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 2.6x and even P/S higher than 7x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Cosmos Group Performed Recently?
For example, consider that Cosmos Group's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. Those who are bullish on Cosmos Group will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Cosmos Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, Cosmos Group would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 38% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 11% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that Cosmos Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
What Does Cosmos Group's P/S Mean For Investors?
Shares in Cosmos Group have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
It's no surprise that Cosmos Group maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
