The WuXi AppTec Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603259) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 34%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 39% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, WuXi AppTec may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 17.7x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 30x and even P/E's higher than 58x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for WuXi AppTec as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. If not, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think WuXi AppTec's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

WuXi AppTec's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 9.6% decrease to the company's bottom line. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 117% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 13% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 19% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that WuXi AppTec's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On WuXi AppTec's P/E

Despite WuXi AppTec's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of WuXi AppTec's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for WuXi AppTec that you need to be mindful of.
