It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. For example, the TVZone Media Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603721) share price has soared 123% in the last three years. That sort of return is as solid as granite. And in the last month, the share price has gained 26%.

Since the stock has added CN¥384m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

TVZone Media wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last 3 years TVZone Media saw its revenue shrink by 0.5% per year. So the share price gain of 31% per year is quite surprising. It's a good reminder that expectations about the future, not the past history, always impact share prices.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between TVZone Media's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. TVZone Media's TSR of 128% for the 3 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that TVZone Media shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 29% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 1.6% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with TVZone Media , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
