Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Hunan Kaimeite Gases Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002549) shareholders. Unfortunately, they have held through a 56% decline in the share price in that time. But it's up 9.4% in the last week.

While the stock has risen 9.4% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Hunan Kaimeite Gases saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
