There's No Escaping Suli Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:603585) Muted Revenues Despite A 26% Share Price Rise
Those holding Suli Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603585) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 26% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 31% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, Suli may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Chemicals industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 2x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Suli's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Suli over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Suli's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 31%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 43% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 25% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Suli's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.
The Final Word
Suli's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
In line with expectations, Suli maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
