Fujian Cement (SHSE:600802 shareholders incur further losses as stock declines 14% this week, taking three-year losses to 46%
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Fujian Cement Inc. (SHSE:600802) share price up 26% in a single quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 47% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.
If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Fujian Cement isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

Because Fujian Cement made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last three years Fujian Cement saw its revenue shrink by 26% per year. That means its revenue trend is very weak compared to other loss making companies. With revenue in decline, the share price decline of 14% per year is hardly undeserved. It would probably be worth asking whether the company can fund itself to profitability. Of course, it is possible for businesses to bounce back from a revenue drop - but we'd want to see that before getting interested.

A Different Perspective
Fujian Cement shareholders are down 24% for the year, but the market itself is up 14%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 7% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
