Guangzhou Restaurant Group's (SHSE:603043) earnings have declined over three years, contributing to shareholders 16% loss
Guangzhou Restaurant Group Company Limited (SHSE:603043) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 37% in the last quarter. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. In fact, the share price is down 21% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.
While the last three years has been tough for Guangzhou Restaurant Group shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, Guangzhou Restaurant Group's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 2.7% each year. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 7% annual reduction in the share price. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Guangzhou Restaurant Group's TSR for the last 3 years was -16%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Guangzhou Restaurant Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 4.4% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 14%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.7% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
