Pony Testing (SZSE:300887) Will Pay A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
Pony Testing Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300887) has announced that on 15th of July, it will be paying a dividend ofCN¥0.06, which a reduction from last year's comparable dividend. This means that the dividend yield is 0.7%, which is a bit low when comparing to other companies in the industry.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Pony Testing's stock price has reduced by 33% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

Pony Testing's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Prior to this announcement, the dividend made up 6,061% of earnings, and the company was generating negative free cash flows. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating free cash flows is a major warning sign for the sustainability of the dividend as these levels are certainly a bit high.
Analysts expect a massive rise in earnings per share in the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate that the payout ratio could reach 10%, which is in a comfortable range for us.
Pony Testing's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Looking back, the company hasn't been paying the most consistent dividend, but with such a short dividend history it could be too early to draw solid conclusions. Since 2021, the dividend has gone from CN¥0.0812 total annually to CN¥0.06. This works out to be a decline of approximately 9.6% per year over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Dividends have been going in the wrong direction, so we definitely want to see a different trend in the earnings per share. Pony Testing's EPS has fallen by approximately 69% per year during the past five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.
Pony Testing's Dividend Doesn't Look Great
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The company seems to be stretching itself a bit to make such big payments, but it doesn't appear they can be consistent over time. We don't think that this is a great candidate to be an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. To that end, Pony Testing has 4 warning signs (and 2 which make us uncomfortable) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
