Willing New Energy (SZSE:002667) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, Willing New Energy (SZSE:002667) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Willing New Energy:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.017 = CN¥26m ÷ (CN¥2.2b - CN¥680m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
So, Willing New Energy has an ROCE of 1.7%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Machinery industry average of 6.1%.

What Can We Tell From Willing New Energy's ROCE Trend?
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 1.7%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 92% more capital is being employed now too. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 31% of its operations, which isn't ideal. It's worth keeping an eye on this because as the percentage of current liabilities to total assets increases, some aspects of risk also increase.
The Bottom Line
All in all, it's terrific to see that Willing New Energy is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. And given the stock has remained rather flat over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here if other metrics are strong. That being the case, research into the company's current valuation metrics and future prospects seems fitting.
