Lubair Aviation Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:001316) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 8th of July to CN¥0.645. This will take the annual payment to 2.3% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Lubair Aviation Technology's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Based on the last payment, Lubair Aviation Technology's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. No cash flows could definitely make returning cash to shareholders difficult, or at least mean the balance sheet will come under pressure.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 97.3%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 31% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Lubair Aviation Technology Is Still Building Its Track Record

The company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long at all, so we can't really make a judgement on how stable the dividend has been. This doesn't mean that the company can't pay a good dividend, but just that we want to wait until it can prove itself.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Lubair Aviation Technology has seen earnings per share falling at 2.4% per year over the last five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Lubair Aviation Technology will make a great income stock. While Lubair Aviation Technology is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We don't think Lubair Aviation Technology is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. To that end, Lubair Aviation Technology has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
