Xinya Electronic Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:605277) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
Most readers would already be aware that Xinya Electronic's (SHSE:605277) stock increased significantly by 35% over the past three months. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. In this article, we decided to focus on Xinya Electronic's ROE.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Xinya Electronic is:
9.6% = CN¥136m ÷ CN¥1.4b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every CN¥1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn CN¥0.10 in profit.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
Xinya Electronic's Earnings Growth And 9.6% ROE
On the face of it, Xinya Electronic's ROE is not much to talk about. However, the fact that the its ROE is quite higher to the industry average of 6.5% doesn't go unnoticed by us. Still, Xinya Electronic's net income growth of 4.3% over the past five years was mediocre at best. Bear in mind, the company does have a low ROE. It is just that the industry ROE is lower. Hence, this goes some way in explaining the low earnings growth.
As a next step, we compared Xinya Electronic's net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 10% in the same period.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Xinya Electronic is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is Xinya Electronic Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Despite having a moderate three-year median payout ratio of 36% (implying that the company retains the remaining 64% of its income), Xinya Electronic's earnings growth was quite low. Therefore, there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.
Moreover, Xinya Electronic has been paying dividends for four years, which is a considerable amount of time, suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth.
Summary
On the whole, we do feel that Xinya Electronic has some positive attributes. Yet, the low earnings growth is a bit concerning, especially given that the company has a respectable rate of return and is reinvesting a huge portion of its profits. By the looks of it, there could be some other factors, not necessarily in control of the business, that's preventing growth. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company. Our risks dashboard would have the 2 risks we have identified for Xinya Electronic.
