It's been a soft week for China Spacesat Co.,Ltd. (SHSE:600118) shares, which are down 11%. On the bright side the returns have been quite good over the last half decade. It has returned a market beating 16% in that time.

While the stock has fallen 11% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

China SpacesatLtd's earnings per share are down 24% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

Since the EPS are down strongly, it seems highly unlikely market participants are looking at EPS to value the company. Given that EPS is down, but the share price is up, it seems clear the market is focussed on other aspects of the business, at the moment.

We doubt the modest 0.2% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. It is not great to see that revenue has dropped by 1.5% per year over five years. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

China SpacesatLtd provided a TSR of 3.7% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return.
