Streamax Technology (SZSE:002970) Might Be Having Difficulty Using Its Capital Effectively
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after investigating Streamax Technology (SZSE:002970), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Streamax Technology is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = CN¥193m ÷ (CN¥2.9b - CN¥1.2b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Therefore, Streamax Technology has an ROCE of 11%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Auto Components industry average of 7.0% it's much better.

In the above chart we have measured Streamax Technology's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like, you can check out the forecasts from the analysts covering Streamax Technology for free.
The Trend Of ROCE
In terms of Streamax Technology's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 39% over the last five years. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that Streamax Technology has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 42%, which we'd consider pretty high. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
Our Take On Streamax Technology's ROCE
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Streamax Technology. And there could be an opportunity here if other metrics look good too, because the stock has declined 38% in the last five years. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
