Shenzhen Kedali Industry (SZSE:002850) jumps 21% this week, though earnings growth is still tracking behind five-year shareholder returns
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. Long term Shenzhen Kedali Industry Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002850) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 202% in five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 29% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 17% in 90 days).
The past week has proven to be lucrative for Shenzhen Kedali Industry investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, Shenzhen Kedali Industry managed to grow its earnings per share at 50% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 25% over the same period. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Shenzhen Kedali Industry the TSR over the last 5 years was 210%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Shenzhen Kedali Industry shareholders gained a total return of 2.6% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 25% over five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Shenzhen Kedali Industry .
