Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Cencosud (SNSE:CENCOSUD)
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Cencosud (SNSE:CENCOSUD) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Cencosud, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = CL$1.1t ÷ (CL$14t - CL$3.9t) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
Thus, Cencosud has an ROCE of 11%. That's a pretty standard return and it's in line with the industry average of 11%.

Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 39% more capital is being employed now too. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
What We Can Learn From Cencosud's ROCE
To sum it up, Cencosud has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Since the stock has only returned 0.1% to shareholders over the last five years, the promising fundamentals may not be recognized yet by investors.
