Medartis Holding's (VTX:MED) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock advances 8.5% this past week
Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. We regret to report that long term Medartis Holding AG (VTX:MED) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 50% in three years, versus a market decline of about 4.7%. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 23% in the last year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 14% in the last three months.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Medartis Holding moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.
We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 14% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating Medartis Holding further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
Medartis Holding shareholders are down 23% for the year, but the market itself is up 21%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 8% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
