Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. When you buy individual stocks, you can make higher profits, but you also face the risk of under-performance. Investors in Interroll Holding AG (VTX:INRN) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 44%. That's well below the market decline of 3.3%. We note that it has not been easy for shareholders over three years, either; the share price is down 38% in that time. Even worse, it's down 24% in about a month, which isn't fun at all. However, we note the price may have been impacted by the broader market, which is down 15% in the same time period.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Unhappily, Interroll Holding had to report a 6.3% decline in EPS over the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 44% share price fall. This suggests the EPS fall has made some shareholders more nervous about the business.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 3.3% in the twelve months, Interroll Holding shareholders did even worse, losing 43% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 1.3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
