You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.3x Tiny Ltd. (CVE:TINY) is a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Software companies in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.8x and even P/S higher than 10x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Tiny Performed Recently?

Tiny could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Tiny's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 21% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 106% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 26% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 19% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Tiny's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Tiny's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
