Cautious Investors Not Rewarding Datametrex AI Limited's (CVE:DM) Performance Completely

It's not a stretch to say that Datametrex AI Limited's (CVE:DM) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.6x seems quite "middle-of-the-road" for IT companies in Canada, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Datametrex AI Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Datametrex AI over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Datametrex AI's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 55%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 223% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 5.8% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that Datametrex AI is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Datametrex AI's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

To our surprise, Datametrex AI revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to see the likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
