AnalytixInsight (CVE:ALY) Is In A Good Position To Deliver On Growth Plans

We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.

So, the natural question for AnalytixInsight (CVE:ALY) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is AnalytixInsight's Cash Runway?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. When AnalytixInsight last reported its balance sheet in December 2021, it had zero debt and cash worth CA$6.1m. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through CA$2.1m. That means it had a cash runway of about 2.9 years as of December 2021. Arguably, that's a prudent and sensible length of runway to have. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is AnalytixInsight Growing?

AnalytixInsight boosted investment sharply in the last year, with cash burn ramping by 62%. As if that's not bad enough, the operating revenue also dropped by 5.6%, making us very wary indeed. Considering both these metrics, we're a little concerned about how the company is developing. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. You can take a look at how AnalytixInsight has developed its business over time by checking this visualization of its revenue and earnings history.

How Easily Can AnalytixInsight Raise Cash?

While AnalytixInsight seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

AnalytixInsight's cash burn of CA$2.1m is about 4.9% of its CA$42m market capitalisation. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.

So, Should We Worry About AnalytixInsight's Cash Burn?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way AnalytixInsight is burning through its cash. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. Although its increasing cash burn does give us reason for pause, the other metrics we discussed in this article form a positive picture overall. Based on the factors mentioned in this article, we think its cash burn situation warrants some attention from shareholders, but we don't think they should be worried. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 5 warning signs for AnalytixInsight (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
