If You Had Bought Morguard's (TSE:MRC) Shares A Year Ago You Would Be Down 43%
Morguard Corporation (TSE:MRC) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 12% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been less than pleasing. The cold reality is that the stock has dropped 43% in one year, under-performing the market.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Unhappily, Morguard had to report a 73% decline in EPS over the last year. This fall in the EPS is significantly worse than the 43% the share price fall. So despite the weak per-share profits, some investors are probably relieved the situation wasn't more difficult.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective
Investors in Morguard had a tough year, with a total loss of 43% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 5.9%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Morguard has 4 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit concerning) we think you should know about.
