Does CT Real Estate Investment Trust (TSE:CRT.UN) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like CT Real Estate Investment Trust (TSE:CRT.UN), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is CT Real Estate Investment Trust Growing?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Over the last three years, CT Real Estate Investment Trust has grown EPS by 14% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). CT Real Estate Investment Trust maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 2.4% to CA$515m. That's progress.

Are CT Real Estate Investment Trust Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I always like to check up on CEO compensation, because I think that reasonable pay levels, around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like CT Real Estate Investment Trust with market caps between CA$2.5b and CA$8.0b is about CA$3.6m.
The CT Real Estate Investment Trust CEO received CA$1.8m in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Should You Add CT Real Estate Investment Trust To Your Watchlist?
As I already mentioned, CT Real Estate Investment Trust is a growing business, which is what I like to see. On top of that, my faith in the board of directors is strengthened by the fact of the reasonable CEO pay. So I do think the stock deserves further research, if not instant addition to your watchlist. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for CT Real Estate Investment Trust (1 is concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
