CanadaBis Capital Inc. (CVE:CANB) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 33%

The CanadaBis Capital Inc. (CVE:CANB) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 33%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 87% share price decline.

After such a large drop in price, CanadaBis Capital's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.2x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 15x and even P/E's above 32x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

For instance, CanadaBis Capital's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is CanadaBis Capital's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as CanadaBis Capital's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 41% decrease to the company's bottom line. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 24% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

In light of this, it's understandable that CanadaBis Capital's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From CanadaBis Capital's P/E?

The softening of CanadaBis Capital's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that CanadaBis Capital maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
