We're Interested To See How Midnight Sun Mining (CVE:MMA) Uses Its Cash Hoard To Grow
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, Midnight Sun Mining (CVE:MMA) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 119%. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
So notwithstanding the buoyant share price, we think it's well worth asking whether Midnight Sun Mining's cash burn is too risky. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.
How Long Is Midnight Sun Mining's Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Midnight Sun Mining last reported its September 2024 balance sheet in November 2024, it had zero debt and cash worth CA$7.8m. In the last year, its cash burn was CA$2.3m. So it had a cash runway of about 3.4 years from September 2024. A runway of this length affords the company the time and space it needs to develop the business. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Is Midnight Sun Mining's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Because Midnight Sun Mining isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. Over the last year its cash burn actually increased by 7.1%, which suggests that management are increasing investment in future growth, but not too quickly. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but investors should be mindful of the fact that will shorten the cash runway. Midnight Sun Mining makes us a little nervous due to its lack of substantial operating revenue. So we'd generally prefer stocks from this list of stocks that have analysts forecasting growth.
How Easily Can Midnight Sun Mining Raise Cash?
Since its cash burn is increasing (albeit only slightly), Midnight Sun Mining shareholders should still be mindful of the possibility it will require more cash in the future. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Since it has a market capitalisation of CA$105m, Midnight Sun Mining's CA$2.3m in cash burn equates to about 2.2% of its market value. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.
How Risky Is Midnight Sun Mining's Cash Burn Situation?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Midnight Sun Mining is burning through its cash. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. While its increasing cash burn wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn; the company seems well on top of its medium-term spending needs. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 5 warning signs for Midnight Sun Mining (of which 3 are a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
