Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Orbit Garant Drilling Inc.'s (TSE:OGD) 26% Price Drop
The Orbit Garant Drilling Inc. (TSE:OGD) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 58% in the last year.
After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies in Canada have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 16x, you may consider Orbit Garant Drilling as an attractive investment with its 9.7x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Orbit Garant Drilling certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Orbit Garant Drilling?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Orbit Garant Drilling's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 417% gain to the company's bottom line. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 23% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why Orbit Garant Drilling is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Orbit Garant Drilling's P/E
Orbit Garant Drilling's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Orbit Garant Drilling revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
