CCL Industries Insiders Sold CA$4.2m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Many CCL Industries Inc. (TSE:CCL.B) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

CCL Industries Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President of Food & Beverage, Gunther Birkner, sold CA$1.4m worth of shares at a price of CA$68.60 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (CA$60.84). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

CCL Industries Insiders Are Selling The Stock

We have seen a bit of insider selling at CCL Industries, over the last three months. Independent Director Thomas Peddie sold just CA$60k worth of shares in that time. Neither the lack of buying nor the presence of selling is heartening. But the amount sold isn't enough for us to put any weight on it.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. CCL Industries insiders own about CA$89m worth of shares. That equates to 0.8% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At CCL Industries Tell Us?

An insider sold CCL Industries shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. But since CCL Industries is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We'd practice some caution before buying! If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink.
