TC Energy Corporation (TSE:TRP) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
When close to half the companies in the Oil and Gas industry in Canada have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.9x, you may consider TC Energy Corporation (TSE:TRP) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 4.1x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How TC Energy Has Been Performing
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, TC Energy has been doing relatively well. The P/S is probably high because investors think this strong revenue performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.
Keen to find out how analysts think TC Energy's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. How Is TC Energy's Revenue Growth Trending?
TC Energy's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 11%. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 27% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eleven analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.0% per annum over the next three years. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 0.5% each year.
In light of this, it's alarming that TC Energy's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What Does TC Energy's P/S Mean For Investors?
It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
For a company with revenues that are set to decline in the context of a growing industry, TC Energy's P/S is much higher than we would've anticipated. In cases like this where we see revenue decline on the horizon, we suspect the share price is at risk of following suit, bringing back the high P/S into the realms of suitability. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it'll be a challenging time for shareholders.
Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for TC Energy (2 are a bit unpleasant) you should be aware of.
