Canadian Natural Resources' (TSE:CNQ) investors will be pleased with their massive 490% return over the last three years
For us, stock picking is in large part the hunt for the truly magnificent stocks. Not every pick can be a winner, but when you pick the right stock, you can win big. One such superstar is Canadian Natural Resources Limited (TSE:CNQ), which saw its share price soar 399% in three years. In the last week the share price is up 2.1%.
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During three years of share price growth, Canadian Natural Resources achieved compound earnings per share growth of 30% per year. In comparison, the 71% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Canadian Natural Resources' TSR for the last 3 years was 490%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
While it's never nice to take a loss, Canadian Natural Resources shareholders can take comfort that , including dividends, their trailing twelve month loss of 4.3% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 8.7%. Of course, the long term returns are far more important and the good news is that over five years, the stock has returned 19% for each year. In the best case scenario the last year is just a temporary blip on the journey to a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Canadian Natural Resources better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Canadian Natural Resources (1 is a bit unpleasant) that you should be aware of.
