In the last year, many Cameco Corporation (TSE:CCO) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Cameco Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider, Alice Wong, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$4.3m worth of shares at a price of CA$63.70 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (CA$83.56). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 46% of Alice Wong's holding. Notably Alice Wong was also the biggest buyer, having purchased CA$1.3m worth of shares.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 73.30k shares for CA$1.3m. On the other hand they divested 125.98k shares, for CA$8.2m. In total, Cameco insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. They sold for an average price of about CA$64.83. It's not too encouraging to see that insiders have sold at below the current price. But we wouldn't put too much weight on the insider selling. Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.2% of Cameco shares, worth about CA$75m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
