When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But if you pick the right stock, you can make a lot more than 100%. For example, the H2O Innovation Inc. (CVE:HEO) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 102%. On top of that, the share price is up 51% in about a quarter. Looking back further, the stock price is 72% higher than it was three years ago.

H2O Innovation isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last year H2O Innovation saw its revenue grow by 15%. We respect that sort of growth, no doubt. The revenue growth is decent but the share price had an even better year, gaining 102%. If the profitability is on the horizon then now could be a very exciting time to be a shareholder. But investors need to be wary of how the 'fear of missing out' could influence them to buy without doing thorough research.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that H2O Innovation has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 102% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 13% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
