Investors Appear Satisfied With MDA Space Ltd.'s (TSE:MDA) Prospects As Shares Rocket 30%

Those holding MDA Space Ltd. (TSE:MDA) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 30% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 89%.

Following the firm bounce in price, MDA Space may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 42.5x, since almost half of all companies in Canada have P/E ratios under 15x and even P/E's lower than 8x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

Recent times have been pleasing for MDA Space as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as MDA Space's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 62%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 2,351% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 31% each year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 12% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that MDA Space's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

The strong share price surge has got MDA Space's P/E rushing to great heights as well. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of MDA Space's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.

A lot of potential risks can sit within a company's balance sheet. Our free balance sheet analysis for MDA Space with six simple checks will allow you to discover any risks that could be an issue.
