Market Participants Recognise Magellan Aerospace Corporation's (TSE:MAL) Earnings Pushing Shares 29% Higher
Magellan Aerospace Corporation (TSE:MAL) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 99%.
Following the firm bounce in price, Magellan Aerospace's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.3x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Magellan Aerospace has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Magellan Aerospace would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 243% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 33% each year during the coming three years according to the dual analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 9.9% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Magellan Aerospace's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Magellan Aerospace's P/E
The strong share price surge has got Magellan Aerospace's P/E rushing to great heights as well. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Magellan Aerospace's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
