The one-year decline in earnings might be taking its toll on Bombardier (TSE:BBD.B) shareholders as stock falls 4.5% over the past week
When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Bombardier Inc. (TSE:BBD.B) share price has soared 136% return in just a single year. It's also good to see the share price up 12% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 6.2% in 90 days). And shareholders have also done well over the long term, with an increase of 103% in the last three years.
While the stock has fallen 4.5% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year, Bombardier actually saw its earnings per share drop 51%.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
However the year on year revenue growth of 16% would help. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Bombardier shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 136% over the last year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 16%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 6 warning signs for Bombardier (2 are a bit concerning) that you should be aware of.
