Does The Market Have A Low Tolerance For AtkinsRéalis Group Inc.'s (TSE:ATRL) Mixed Fundamentals?
With its stock down 9.4% over the past three months, it is easy to disregard AtkinsRéalis Group (TSE:ATRL). It is possible that the markets have ignored the company's differing financials and decided to lean-in to the negative sentiment. Fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes so it makes sense to study the company's financials. In this article, we decided to focus on AtkinsRéalis Group's ROE.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for AtkinsRéalis Group is:
9.5% = CA$324m ÷ CA$3.4b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every CA$1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn CA$0.10 in profit.
What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
AtkinsRéalis Group's Earnings Growth And 9.5% ROE
On the face of it, AtkinsRéalis Group's ROE is not much to talk about. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 12%. But AtkinsRéalis Group saw a five year net income decline of 8.8% over the past five years. Bear in mind, the company does have a slightly low ROE. So that's what might be causing earnings growth to shrink.
That being said, we compared AtkinsRéalis Group's performance with the industry and were concerned when we found that while the company has shrunk its earnings, the industry has grown its earnings at a rate of 11% in the same 5-year period.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is ATRL fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is AtkinsRéalis Group Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
AtkinsRéalis Group's low three-year median payout ratio of 14% (implying that it retains the remaining 86% of its profits) comes as a surprise when you pair it with the shrinking earnings. This typically shouldn't be the case when a company is retaining most of its earnings. So there could be some other explanations in that regard. For example, the company's business may be deteriorating.
Moreover, AtkinsRéalis Group has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth. Existing analyst estimates suggest that the company's future payout ratio is expected to drop to 2.8% over the next three years. As a result, the expected drop in AtkinsRéalis Group's payout ratio explains the anticipated rise in the company's future ROE to 14%, over the same period.
Conclusion
In total, we're a bit ambivalent about AtkinsRéalis Group's performance. While the company does have a high rate of reinvestment, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping any benefit to its investors, and moreover, its having a negative impact on the earnings growth. With that said, we studied the latest analyst forecasts and found that while the company has shrunk its earnings in the past, analysts expect its earnings to grow in the future.
