Stock Analysis
Biomm (BVMF:BIOM3) jumps 13% this week, taking one-year gains to 116%
When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But if you pick the right business to buy shares in, you can make more than you can lose. For example, the Biomm S.A. (BVMF:BIOM3) share price has soared 110% return in just a single year. Better yet, the share price has risen 13% in the last week. In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 29% lower than it was three years ago.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

Biomm isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last year Biomm saw its revenue grow by 1.4%. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. So we wouldn't have expected the share price to rise by 110%. We're happy that investors have made money, though we wonder if the increase will be sustained. We're not so sure that revenue growth is driving the market optimism about the stock.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered Biomm's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Biomm hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 116% exceeds its share price return of 110%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Biomm shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 116% over one year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 0.3%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Biomm (at least 2 which are potentially serious) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
