Odontoprev's (BVMF:ODPV3) three-year earnings growth trails the decent shareholder returns
By buying an index fund, investors can approximate the average market return. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, Odontoprev S.A. (BVMF:ODPV3) shareholders have seen the share price rise 15% over three years, well in excess of the market return (2.3%, not including dividends).
The past week has proven to be lucrative for Odontoprev investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.
We've discovered 1 warning sign about Odontoprev. View them for free.To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Odontoprev was able to grow its EPS at 15% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. The average annual share price increase of 5% is actually lower than the EPS growth. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock. We'd venture the lowish P/E ratio of 11.44 also reflects the negative sentiment around the stock.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Odontoprev, it has a TSR of 38% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Investors in Odontoprev had a tough year, with a total loss of 1.4% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 5.5%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 4% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Odontoprev you should know about.
