Earnings Working Against Grupo Mateus S.A.'s (BVMF:GMAT3) Share Price Following 27% Dive
The Grupo Mateus S.A. (BVMF:GMAT3) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 32% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in Brazil have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 10x, you may still consider Grupo Mateus as an attractive investment with its 5.7x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Recent times have been advantageous for Grupo Mateus as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Grupo Mateus' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 42%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 96% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 2.5% each year during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 15% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Grupo Mateus' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
Grupo Mateus' recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Grupo Mateus' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Grupo Mateus you should know about.
